Pop star Justin Bieber will voice the title role in Cupid, a new animated feature about the ancient god of love and attraction. After being discovered on YouTube, Canadian performer Bieber quickly rocketed to fame as a pop singer and teen idol. To date, Bieber has sold an estimated 140 million albums worldwide while scoring 8 No. 1 hits.
In 2011, Bieber made the leap to the big screen with the 3D concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which went on to gross $99 million worldwide. A 2013 sequel Justin Bieber's Believe was less well-received however, with just $32 million in reported ticket sales. Despite his worldwide popularity and star charisma, Bieber has yet to take on a starring role in a feature film, instead sticking to cameo appearances in movies as varied as Men in Black 3, Zoolander 2 (where he famously died) and Killing Hasselhoff.

But now the pop star may be ready to expand his brand by taking on more movie work. As reported by Deadline, the singer will team with Mythos Studios to develop an animated film based on the mythological figure Cupid, with Bieber set to voice the lead role. Mythos, a studio co-founded by Bieber's long-time manager Scooter Braun, previously worked with the singer on his Never Say Never concert film. Braun said this of Bieber's interest in the Cupid project:
"When this project was brought to Justin, he instantly was excited to be a part of it. Fortunately for us, like Cupid, he knows a little bit about love and mischief."
In ancient mythology, Cupid (or Eros as he was known to the Greeks) is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. The character is often depicted in art as a chubby winged boy armed with a bow-and-arrow (we will have to wait and see how the character's appearance is tweaked for the Cupid film to fit with Bieber's image). When Cupid shoots someone with his arrows, they immediately become smitten with desire. The figure would later come to be associated with the romantic holiday Valentine's Day.
Playing the voice of Cupid in an animated film may seem like a strange way for Justin Bieber to expand his film presence. At 24, it's arguable that the singer could begin taking on more serious adult roles if he wished (for a short time there was a rumor that he might be playing Robin in Batman V Superman, but it turned out to be a hoax). Then again, perhaps Bieber and his team are concerned that if he goes too adult, it will result in a backlash from his younger fans. Bieber's own off-stage behavior has sometimes landed him in hot water, so perhaps the thinking is that he should continue avoiding any roles that make him seem too gritty and grown-up.
