DJ Khaled (and baby Asahd) have another reason to be thankful this week, as their album Grateful completes its second week in the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart. This makes Grateful the first album since Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. to occupy that coveted number one spot for more than one week.
According to the Nielsen Music numbers, DJ Khaled's 10th studio album earned 70,000 equivalent album units this week, which is down 53 percent from last week. The majority of those units - 42,000 units to be exact - came from to online streaming. In other words, this is the equivalent of 63.4 million on-demand audio streams. 16,000 units were from traditional album sales.
As Complex reported last week, Grateful debuted on the charts in the number one spot last year, making it DJ Khaled's second consecutive album to debut at the top of the charts. For comparison, while Grateful earned 149,000 album units in its first week, Major Key sold 95,000 units.
DJ Khaled put a lot of effort into Grateful, even though his 8-month-old son, Asahd, is listed as the executive producer. Of the album's 22 tracks, three were released in the weeks leading up to the June 23rd release, and they were all smash hits, successfully helping to in build up anticipation for the album. It started with the Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Quavo, and Lil Wayne collaboration on "I'm The One" and continued strong with Drake's "To The Max." Finally, Bryson Tiller and Rihanna's "Wild Thoughts" was released just one week before the album.
There had been some speculation that the producer's star-studded album would not do so well this week, especially with the release of Calvin Harris's Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 on June 30, which has snagged the number two spot on this week's charts. That album counts 68,000 units for its first week, most of which (39,000) come from streaming as well.
The number three spot on the chart belongs to Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. This marks the Compton rapper's fourth studio album's twelfth week in one of the top three spots on the Billboard charts.
