Song Review: Miley Cyrus Soars Toward Liberation of the "Midnight Sky" for Latest Disco-Tinged Single

   She. Is. Miley. Cyrus.

That's the title of the former Disney starlet's upcoming seventh album. Initially set to be shared in three separate six-track extended play versions ahead of a full-length release, we only got part one.

Artists such as RuPaul and Ghostface Killah lent support to She Is Coming last year, but the rest of the project was cancelled due to vocal cord surgery and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Following singles "Mother's Daughter", "Slide Away" and a "Don't Call Me Angel" collaboration, Cyrus ensures fans she's now ready to unleash the new album... for real this time.

With the latest, disco-tinged "Midnight Sky", the artist reflects on her past as she rushes towards a new life of liberation. Following a publicized romantic separation, Cyrus now confidently sings that she does not to love or be loved to be happy. She is embracing a newfound free spirit, rebuilding her strength, basking in the freedom, and carving out a brighter future.

Many might be in a dark, depressed state of mind navigating the current state of world affairs -- a pandemic, exhausting political warfare, messy break ups -- yet the artist encourages all to hold their heads up high and create their own unique environment they want to thrive in.

"But it's been a long time since I felt this good on my own, lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes, forever and ever, no more," she sings on the track's intro.

Wrapped in sultry, moody production courtesy of Louis Bell (Halsey) and Andrew Watt (Dua Lipa), "Midnight Sky" is a vast departure from the country-pop aesthetic of Cyrus' last proper album. Instead, it aligns with the artist's desire for a "genre-less" approach to a future collection of work. Disco, pop, and alternative inspiration lift the new release to soaring heights.

"Midnight Sky" is a fearless, self-empowerment anthem for an artist who has faced a few recent obstacles in her personal life. Not only is she using the release to better herself, but to better the lives of all those who come across it. It's also a successful tease at a new artistic direction for Cyrus. For someone who has already conquered the pop, hip-hop, and country genres, disco appears effortless as well.
